CURRENT S&T / RESEARCH - Contributing to Water S&T by conducting research on aquatic optics and remote sensing of inland waters
- Development, validation and application of bio-geo-optical models and algorithms for the retrieval of water quality information from in situ and remotely sensed water colour in optically complex coastal and inland waters
- Characterisation of the optical properties of the main dissolved and particulate colour producing agents
- Strengthening the capabilities for the operational use of earth observation techniques in monitoring aquatic processes through the development of autonomous satellite image acquisition & processing methods applicable to aquatic colour sensors such as MODIS, SeaWiFS and MERIS
- Analysis and interpretation of derived remote sensing water quality products in relation to water quality issues such as harmful algal blooms, suspended particulates & water clarity
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES / INTERESTS
Research Fellow on two Canadian Space Agency GRIP projects aimed at producing remotely sensed water quality products for the lower Great Lakes and developing techniques for detection of harmful algal blooms from multispectral aquatic colour
Collaboration with EU partners to initiate the use of ships of opportunity to demonstrate the value of above-water radiometry for water quality monitoring of European waters
With support from the UK Natural Environment Research Council, developed inverse modelling methods for the retrieval of suspended sediments in UK shelf seas with the subsequent study of sediment properties in relation to tidal dynamics
