CURRENT S&T / RESEARCH - Contributing to Environment Canada’s mandate to ensure wildlife is conserved and protected

  • Research on sea ducks (eiders, scoters, goldeneyes, harlequins, long-tailed ducks): satellite telemetry studies of movements; location and characterisation of moulting sites; ecology and behaviour of moult; spring and fall staging; breeding ecology; population dynamics
  • Impact of industrial practices on birds (forestry, wind farms, peat mining): woodpecker ecology; impact of wind farms on birds; use of weather radars to quantify nocturnal bird migration
  • Urban bird ecology: development of urban bird atlases; bird habitat relationships; biodiversity in urban ecosystems
  • Survey techniques: migration monitoring; point counts and spot-mapping techniques; aerial surveys
