Green Municipal Fund (GMF)
Environment Canada contributes to overseeing the Green Municipal Fund (GMF), a program administered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). The GMF supports municipal initiatives to improve local air, water and soil quality and promote renewable energy with grants and below-market loans.
Areas of project eligibility are:
- Energy
- Water
- Waste
- Sustainable Transportation
- Brownfields
- Integrated Community Plans
The Government of Canada endowed the FCM with $550 million to establish the GMF, which is co-managed by Natural Resources Canada and Environment Canada at arm's length.
The FCM Board of Directors is the decision-making body for the fund. It is advised by a 15-member Council with five federal appointees, two of whom are from Environment Canada.
Environment Canada Peer Reviewers provide the GMF and federal Council Members with expert advice on proposals for plans, studies or capital projects.
Technology Impacts and Programs Division maintains a GMF Secretariat that provides support to representatives on the GMF Council and Peer Review Committee.
