Air quality monitoring: nitrogen measurements

The chemistry of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) in the troposphere can result in elevated ozone levels and acid production. The measurement of NO, NO2 and the total of all reactive nitrogen (NOy) are measured using a Thermo Environmental Instruments analyzer. The Model 42C trace level analyzer is based on the chemiluminescent reaction of ozone and NO. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is converted to NO by an Ecophysics 760MH photolytic converter and NOy (NO, NO2, HNO3, HO2, NO2, NO3, N2O5, PAN, organic nitrates, particulate nitrates and others) is converted to NO using a Molybdenum converter heated to 3250C. The automated system includes a calibration routine every 25 hours and the system is audited every three months against a NIST standard.
