Biodiversity Profiles - Vancouver 2010

Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

To create awareness of the International Year of Biodiversity, profiles highlighting biodiversity found near six of the 2010 Winter Games' venues were created. These profiles can be used with the Urban and Nature BioKits to encourage families to explore the natural areas around the venues, and better identify key habitats and species featured in each of the profiles. Even though the 2010 Winter Games are officially over, the venues remain as a legacy of the Games to create awareness of the International Year of Biodiversity to educate families to better appreciate nature and encourage everyone to take action to help stop the loss of biodiversity. They are a prelude to the Vancouver BioKit, currently under development, which will feature several local parks and wetlands for families to explore and help to conserve in the lower mainland.

There are many things you can do to help protect ecosystems here and where you live. Simple actions like not littering, is a big help. Plastics and cigarette butts are harmful to fish, birds, and wildlife. Remember, if you pack it in, pack it out! Other ways to be respectful when you view wildlife or visit the wilderness: stay on designed trails; keep your pets under control to prevent predation; leave plants and birds’ nests undisturbed; learn more about nature; get more involved in conserving and protecting nature by joining a local area environmental stewardship group or find ways to support local environmental projects and initiatives if you cannot volunteer.

If we all do our part to live and work more sustainably, conserve habitat, and protect wildlife, together we will reduce both our individual and collective impacts on the environment. Your actions conserve and protect the web of life and the foundation upon which our culture, society, and economy are built. Your actions here and at home will help ensure this spectacular area and those near you, will remain healthy and vibrant for generations to come.
