Showcasing Pollution Prevention Projects and Their Achievements

The sharing of successful examples of pollution prevention in practice supports the advancement of pollution prevention in Canada and helps to “achieve a climate in which pollution prevention becomes a major consideration in private sector activities,” one of the five key goals outlined in Pollution Prevention: A Federal Strategy for Action.

All success stories published on the website recognize P2 results achieved by companies, institutions, organizations, and facilities that have implemented a new and innovative system, procedure, policy, or technology, or adapted those of another's to meet their needs. The site also showcases relationships that organizations or groups have with their clients and member organizations or the services they offer in order to facilitate the implementation of P2.

The published stories do not in any way describe an endorsement of a particular product, technology or service by the federal government, nor do they describe a partnership, an association or an agency relationship between Environment Canada and any of the companies, institutions, organizations, or facilities with P2 projects profiled on the website. The information in the stories has been provided by external sources. Users wishing to rely upon this information should consult directly with the appropriate source.

We encourage you to read our policies and procedures, on how potential stories are selected and the site is maintained. Should you wish to reproduce any of the content or create a link to one of the success stories on a separate website, you are advised to refer to Environment Canada's terms and conditions regarding the use of its web content.

Selection Process

All stories posted on the site must describe pollution prevention projects that have been implemented and that have achieved significant environmental, economic, and social benefits. The site does not endorse technologies; however, stories describing technologies or services that are accompanied by specific project results (environmental, economic and social benefits) are eligible to be profiled in a story. If technology manufacturers have implemented facility-wide P2 activities and have achieved results, these activities are also eligible to be described in a success story.

Environment Canada identifies potential stories for publication through a number of different sources, which can include but are not limited to, reporting programs, awards programs, and referrals from Environment Canada staff. Municipalities, groups, organizations, and companies of all sizes are eligible to have their story posted on the site.

Policy for Validation of Story Content/Due Diligence

Environment Canada makes every effort to ensure the content of the stories are accurate. The following validation criteria must be met prior to publication of a story:

  • Environment Canada requires a third-party letter of support/documentation verifying that the claims and data being disclosed in the story are true and accurate, for the year in which their story would first be posted. Potential third parties can include suppliers, customers, associations, etc.
  • The profiled party must also pass a compliance check1 conducted by Environment Canada and provincial enforcement staff.

Note: This validation policy was introduced April 1, 2008 and applies to all stories published from this date.

Site Maintenance

Environment Canada is committed to maintaining a current website and providing valid contact information for profiled companies, organizations, etc. in order to facilitate the transfer of knowledge to other interested parties. As such, all stories are reviewed on an annual basis. Those companies, groups and organizations with projects profiled on the site are responsible for ensuring their story is current and accurate.

Success stories will be removed from the website if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Profiled party no longer wants their P2 project(s) profiled or does not respond within 4 months to the request from Environment Canada to review their story.
  • Profiled party no longer exists or contact information is no longer valid.
  • P2 projects are no longer being implemented.

Please note that it is at the discretion of Environment Canada to remove stories from the site should issues arise related to compliance, validation or currency of information.

Stories older than three years are automatically archived on the site but remain accessible to the public.
