Environment Canada is responsible for operating and maintaining the atmospheric observational network for carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (CH4, CO, N2O, and SF6) in Canada. The importance attached to these measurements has been underlined by Environment Canada’s commitment to contribute towards programs such as the World Meteorological Organization’s Global Atmosphere Watch (WMO-GAW) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).
The NAtChem/Greenhouse Gases database serves as a data repository and facility to make available greenhouse gas observations from Environment Canada’s network of stations. All stations follow the strict measurement guidelines imposed by the GAW program.
These measurements document the spatial and temporal distributions of GHGs in Canada, providing essential constraints to our understanding of Canada’s natural and anthropogenic (man-made) sources and sinks of GHGs.
This data is also submitted to the World Meteorological Organization’s Global Atmosphere Watch World Data Centre for Greenhouse Gases to facilitate global re-analysis projects and verification activities.
