Radar overview

Weather radar is an effective tool for detecting and tracking all forms of precipitation, from rain and snow, to ice pellets and hail, and enables meteorologists to provide advance warning of thunderstorms and other hazardous weather.

Environment Canada's radar network consists of 32 sites, which covers most of the population in Canada, especially those in areas that are prone to thunderstorms.

Animated, colour-coded radar images compiled from the latest network data, indicate the location and intensity of precipitation on a national scale and you can zoom in for a detailed regional and local scale. The animated images can provide indications of the short-term motion and development of systems.
