Indicator of Shellfish Safety

CSSP supports the premise that safe and high quality water will result in safe shellfish. Currently the CSSP uses fecal coliform as the indicator of shellfish safety due to fecal contamination in marine waters. The intent is not to index the presence of pathogens but rather the potential to be there in significant numbers to cause illness when shellfish from these waters are consumed. International efforts to add other indicators to better evaluate viral contamination are being examined by Health Canada for the CSSP.
