Proposed Marine Spark-Ignition Engine and Off-road Recreational Vehicle Emission Regulations

The proposed Marine Spark-Ignition Engine and Off-Road Recreational Vehicle Emission Regulations would introduce new regulated standards to reduce smog-forming emissions from outboard motors, personal watercraft, off-road motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and utility vehicles, in alignment with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's standards. The proposed regulations, to be established under section 160 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA), would apply to engines and vehicles of the 2008 and later model years that are manufactured after the planned coming into force date of January 1, 2008.

The proposed regulations would apply to persons in the business of manufacturing, distributing or importing these engines and vehicles for the purpose of sale in Canada, and to persons who import these engines and vehicles for their own use.
