Reference method for measuring releases of mercury from mercury cell chlor-alkali plants: section 1


Section 1: Principle

Gaseous effluent containing mercury is extracted from a point within a stack, duct, or ventilator. The mercury is collected from the stream by impingement in an acid permanganate solution and converted to the oxidized mercury (II) form. Mercury (II) is then reduced to elemental mercury, aerated from the solution, and measured by flameless atomic absorption.
