National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) Quality Control

Facilities that meet NPRI reporting requirements are required by law to submit information that is true, accurate, and complete to the best of their knowledge by the annual reporting deadline (typically June 1st). The Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) sets out penalties for companies that fail to report or that knowingly submit false or misleading information.

In advance of the reporting deadline, Environment Canada provides guidance and support to facility representatives to help them better understand NPRI reporting requirements and provide quality information. Following the reporting deadline, Environment Canada reviews reported data for inaccuracies and reporting errors, and contacts facilities as necessary to verify their reports. If required, facilities are asked to resubmit their reports to correct inaccuracies and errors. The department may also conducts on-site facility visits to verify reported data.

Additional information on the NPRI quality control process and a summary of QC results are available from the links below. Information on NPRI geographic data quality is also available.
