2010 NPRI Reviewed Facility Data Release
3. Where are the Facilities that Reported to the NPRI for 2010 Located?
Facilities that report to the NPRI are found in every province and territory in Canada, as shown on the map in Figure 3.1 and in Table 3.1.
Alberta is the location of the largest number of facilities that reported to the NPRI for 2010 (3311, or 41% of the total). Over 80% of Alberta’s facilities reporting to the NPRI are from the oil and gas industry.
Ontario has the second most facilities that reported for 2010 (1922, or 24% of the total). The majority of these facilities are from the manufacturing sector, concentrated in southern Ontario.
Quebec and British Columbia are each home to approximately 10% of the facilities that reported for 2010 (833 in Quebec, and 807 in British Columbia). Both provinces have many mining facilities and wood products manufacturers. All but one of Canada’s primary aluminum smelters are located in Quebec (the other is located in British Columbia). Over 40% of the reporting facilities in British Columbia are from the oil and gas extraction sector.
The majority of the reporting facilities from Saskatchewan are oil and gas operations. Other reporting facilities from Saskatchewan include grain handling, potash mining and uranium mining operations. In Manitoba, the facilities that reported for 2010 belong to a number of sectors, including mining, manufacturing, and grain handling. A few oil and gas facilities in the southwest portion of Manitoba also reported to the NPRI.
The facilities that reported in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are spread across various sectors such as electric power generation, wastewater treatment and manufacturing. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are home to all of Canada’s producing off-shore oil and gas facilities. A number of diesel generating stations and municipal waste incinerators from Newfoundland also reported for 2010.
Most of the facilities in northern Canada reporting to the NPRI are diesel electric generating stations serving off-grid communities, mining operations, and oil gas extraction facilities.
