Large Stationary Diesel Engine (>600 hp)

Operation of a large stationary diesel engine (greater than 600 horsepower) results in release of Part 1, 2, 4 and 5 Substances from diesel fuel combustion.

Suggested estimation methodology: Emissions Factor

The general equation for emissions estimation is:

E = A x EF

where:

  • E = emissions
  • A = activity Rate
  • EF = emissions factor

Input Data

A = Amount of diesel burned [cubic meters (m3) or Liters (L)]
B = Heating value of natural gas [Giga Joules (GJ)/m3]Footnote*

C = Sulphur content [%]Footnote**

If the amount of diesel in known in liters you must convert it to cubic meters by the following formula:

A[m3] = A[L]/1000

Finally calculate the emissions for each applicable substance by using the appropriate emissions factors given in the tables below.  To calculate the emissions in tonnes divide the emission in kilograms by 1000.

Note on Emissions Factors

The default emission factors are used in the table above, however if you have a site specific emission factor you would prefer to use you may enter it in the emission factor column. If you choose to insert your own emission factor ensure that the units have been converted accordingly. 

The emission factors used in this spreadsheet are based on uncontrolled emissions. If you are using an emission control device you will have to adjust the emissions calculated by this spreadsheet according to the following formula:

Controlled Emissions = Uncontrolled emission x ((100 - control efficiency)/100)
