Wood Products Operation

Wood products operations (e.g. sawmill, lumber mill, panel board mill, wood product manufacturing facility, etc.) result in releases of Criteria Air Contaminants (CAC), dioxins and furans, and hexachlorobenzene (HCB).  The equipment for which the process emissions are calculated with this tool include cyclones and baghouses (for the following releases sources: dry wood chipper, dry wood handling, green wood material handling, miscellaneous wood handling, planers, saws, and silos), lumber kilns, wood residue fired boilers and wood waste conical burners. Other documents are also available to calculate other releases that may apply to wood products operations, such as distillate fuel oil (No. 2 oil) for industrial boilers, but have not yet been incorporated in this tool.

The general equation for emissions estimation is:

E = A x EF

where:

  • E = emissions
  • A = activity rate
  • EF = emission factor

Wood Handling Sources

WHS = wood handling sources [Oven Dry Tonne (ODT) or Thousand Board Feet (MBF)]

Wood handling sources include: Dry Wood Chipper [ODT], Dry Wood Material Handling (cyclones, dry wood residue) [ODT], Green Wood Material Handling (cyclones, green/wet wood residue) [ODT], Miscellaneous Wood Handling (cyclones, mixed wood residues) [MBF], Planer [ODT], Saw [ODT] and Silo [MBF].

Part 4 Releases

The activity rate for wood handling sources is the amount or wood product from each source.  The emissions must be calculated individually for each input and then summed for each substance released.
