National Pollutant Release Inventory Downloadable Facility Datasets
The following NPRI datasets are available through the Government of Canada Open Data Portal and contain data as of September 8, 2015:
Available in XLSX or CSV for the most recent two years of data, these files contain the most commonly used NPRI data fields, within a simplified tabular format, including all facility-reported pollutant releases, disposals and transfers for recycling for a given year, listed by facility and substance.
Available in XLSX or CSV, these files contain NPRI release data for the past five reporting years, aggregated by Province, Industry Type and Substance, and disaggregated by media (air, water and land). The number of reporting facilities represented by each aggregated data point is included*. The results can be further explored using the pre-defined queries available in the online NPRI Facility Search.
*The number of facilities returned by the online NPRI data search may differ from the number contained in the download files. The online results take into account the facility’s reported releases, disposals and transfers, but do not distinguish between media. They also include facilities reporting only under Ontario Regulation 127/01 and facilities submitting “did not meet criteria” reports.
These files are available in XLSX or CSV format and contain bulk data from 1993 up to the latest reporting year available. These datasets are in normalized or ‘list’ format and are optimized for pivot table analysis. The Releases file contains all substance release quantities. The Disposals file contains all on-site and off-site disposal quantities, including Tailings and Waste Rock (TWR). The Transfers file contains all quantities transferred for recycling or treatment prior to disposal. The Comments file contains all the reporter-provided comments about substances included in their report. The Geo Locations file contains complete location information for all facilities that have reported data to the NPRI.
Geographic Distribution of NPRI-Reporting Facilities – Virtual Globe & CSV Formats, and open mapping services (Link coming soon)
This collection comprises the following data products:
1) Available in KMZ, these files contain the NPRI map layers for use in Google Earth™ and other “virtual globe” software. Facilities visualized can be filtered by province and by industry type. When selected, each facility generates its own summary report.
2) Available in CSV and as open mapping services (WMS and ESRI REST), this file contains the geographical distribution of NPRI reporting facilities and other geolocation data for the last reporting year.
Geographic Distribution of Total Reported Releases by Media Group, and of Total Disposals and Transfers (Link coming soon)
These products are available in CSV and as open mapping services (WMS and ESRI REST) and contain the geographical distribution of facilities reporting direct releases, disposals and transfers to the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) for the most recent reporting year. They are grouped by media of release, and by disposal and transfer. Facilities are categorised by industrial sector and total reported quantities.

- Geographic Distribution of Releases to Air (Other Substances)
- Geographic Distribution of Releases to Water
- Geographic Distribution of Releases to Land
- Geographic Distribution of Disposals and Transfers for Recycling
The following NPRI datasets are also available through the Government of Canada Open Data Portal and contain data as of September 16, 2014:
There are a number of factors to keep in mind when using and interpreting National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) data. For example, changes to the list of reported substances over time are important to understand when conducting trend analysis. For more information see Using and Interpreting NPRI Data.
NPRI data is also available through the online search tool for facility-reported data. Note that facility-reported data within these files is available in the official language of submission.
