Data Sources and Methods for the Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Large Facilities Indicator

3. Data

3.1 Data source

The Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Large Facilities indicator is based on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data taken from Environment and Climate Change Canada's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting Program for facilities.

3.2 Spatial coverage

The indicator reports GHG emissions data from large facilities across Canada.

3.3 Temporal coverage

The indicator reports 2015 facility GHG Reporting Program data. The interactive map provides data from 2006 to 2015 for the facilities.

3.4 Data completeness

The GHG Reporting Program provides local GHG emissions data from the largest emitters in Canada (those emitting 50 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent or more per year). Facilities with emissions falling below the reporting threshold of 50 kilotonnes per year can voluntarily report their GHG emissions. The total facility-reported GHG emissions for 2015 represent just over one third (37%) of Canada's total GHG emissions as reported in the 2015 National Inventory Report.

3.5 Data timeliness

The GHG Reporting Program data are collected on an annual basis. Facilities are required to report their GHG emissions to Environment and Climate Change Canada by June 1.
