Science at the Canadian Ice Service (CIS)

Science activities at the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) support the development and implementation of:

  • New techniques to extract operational ice information from existing and future Earth observation satellites.
  • Numerical ice models that predict the growth, decay and drift of sea ice and related data gathering techniques.
  • Seasonal sea ice forecasting techniques.
  • Numerical models that predict the movement and ablation of icebergs.

To accomplish this, CIS partners closely with Canadian and international researchers in research and development, and within field validation activities. More recently, CIS Science participated in various International Polar Year research projects that focused on sea ice research.
