An image taken on January 25, 2012 by NOAA-18 of Lancaster Sound. The image highlights the fast ice edge in the eastern end of Lancaster Sound. Typically the fast ice edge is further west. The fast ice edge only forms at the eastern entrance to Lancaster Sound 2 to 3 times every decade. There is an animation of the 1980-2007 Lancaster Sound mid-May fast ice edge on our IPY Legacy webpage.
