Table 6: List of Hazardous Characteristics10
CodeCharacteristicDescription
H3Flammable Liquids”Flammable" has the same meaning as "inflammable". Flammable liquids are liquids, mixtures of liquids, and liquids containing solids in solution or suspension that give off a flammable vapour at temperatures of not more than 60.5ºC, closed-cup test, or not more than 65.6ºC, open-cup test (since the results of open- and closed-cup tests are not strictly comparable and even individual results by the same test are often variable, regulations varying from the above figures to make allowance for such differences would be within the spirit of this definition). Flammable liquids include paints, varnishes, lacquers, etc., but do not include substances or wastes otherwise classified on account of their dangerous characteristics.
H4.1Flammable SolidsSolids or waste solids (other than those classed as explosives) that, under conditions encountered in transport, are readily combustible or may cause or contribute to fire through friction.
H4.2Substances or Wastes Liable to Spontaneous CombustionSubstances or wastes that are liable to spontaneous heating under normal conditions encountered in transport or to heating up in contact with air, and being liable to catch fire.
H4.3Substances or Wastes That, in Contact with Water, Emit Flammable GasesSubstances or wastes that, by interaction with water, are liable to become spontaneously flammable or to give off flammable gases in dangerous quantities.
H5.1OxidizingSubstances or wastes that, while in themselves are not necessarily combustible, may, generally by yielding oxygen, cause or contribute to the combustion of other materials.
H5.2Organic PeroxidesOrganic substances or wastes containing the bivalent-0-0- structure that may undergo exothermic self- accelerating decomposition due to their thermal instability.
H6.1Poisonous (Acute)Substances or wastes liable to cause death, serious injury, or harm human health if swallowed, inhaled, or in contact with skin.
H6.2Infectious SubstancesSubstances or wastes containing viable micro-organisms or their toxins that are known or suspected to cause disease in animals or humans.
H8CorrosivesSubstances or wastes that, by chemical action, cause severe damage when in contact with living tissue or, in the case of leakage, materially damage or destroy other goods or the means of transport. They may also cause other hazards.
H10Liberation of Toxic Gases in Contact with Air or WaterSubstances or wastes that, by interaction with air or water, are liable to give off toxic gases in dangerous quantities.
H11Toxic (Delayed or Chronic)Substances or wastes that, if they are inhaled, ingested, or penetrate the skin, may involve delayed or chronic effects, including carcinogenicity.
H12EcotoxicSubstances or wastes that, if released, present or may cause immediate or delayed adverse impacts to the environment by means of bioaccumulation or have toxic effects on biotic systems.
H13LeachateSubstances or wastes capable, by any means after disposal, of yielding another material (e.g., leachate that possesses any of the characteristics listed above).
