Inventory of Programs

The Environment Canada Extended Producer Responsibility and Product Stewardship Inventory of Programs provides information to the public on existing extended producer responsibility and product stewardship programs in Canada. Programs in development are not included in the inventory.

The inventory provides information as a service to Canadians who are interested in the recycling of products. It serves as a tool to help identify recycling avenues for different types of products, and does not constitute Environment Canada’s endorsement of the programs and services listed in the inventory. We welcome the submission of suggestions and new information to continually improve the inventory. To do so, please write to

Some of the hyperlinks found in the inventory are to sites of organizations that are not subject to the Official Languages Act. The material found there is therefore in the language(s) used by the sites in question.

    Beverage Containers

    alcoholic beverage containers; ready-to-serve beverage containers; and milk containers

    Electrical and Electronic Equipment

    desktop computers and portable computers; keyboards, mouse devices, and other peripherals; monitors and display devices; printers and fax machines; home audio/ video playback and recording systems; home theatre system; personal and portable playback and recording systems; televisions; telephones (non-cellular) and answering machines; mobile phones (cellular); small appliances; large appliances; electrical and electronic tools; and other categories of products that may be applicable

    Household Hazardous Waste

    aerosol containers; single-use and rechargeable batteries; flammable liquids and materials; gasoline; paint, coatings and their containers; pressurized containers; solvents; pesticides (non-commercial); and other products containing “hazardous” properties

    Mercury Containing Products

    mercury containing lamps, such as compact fluorescent lamps; mercury-containing switches from end-of-life vehicles; and mercury containing thermostats, thermometers or other measuring and control devices that contain mercury

    Packaging and Printed Materials

    packaging or containers that is comprised of glass, metal (e.g. steel cans, aluminum cans), paper (e.g. gable top containers, aseptic containers, corrugated cardboard and boxboard), or plastic (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene, etc) or any combination of any of those materials; printed paper, including newsprint, direct mailings, flyers, magazines, directories and other printed materials; and other materials or products that may be included in a particular program

    Pesticides and Containers

    obsolete pesticides (commercial) and empty pesticide containers (commercial)


    unused or expired health products including prescription drugs; non-prescription drugs; natural health products; and sharps (e.g. needles, syringes and lancets)


    refrigerants from commercial stationary refrigeration and air conditioning equipment (residential, commercial and industrial), such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs)
