Great Lakes–St. Lawrence River Water Levels
Volume 19, Number 8
11 August 2011
Water Levels Update and Meeting Reminder
Due to above-average water supplies and below-average outflows, the level of Lake Superior rose by 8 cm in July, compared to its average July increase of 5 cm. The level of Lakes Michigan–Huron ended July at the same level at which it started the month. As it happens, this is what it has done on average during the month of July over the 1918–2010 period of record. Lake St. Clair’s level fell by 2 cm last month, which is equal to the average amount it falls in July. The level of Lake Erie fell by 10 cm during July, which is twice its average decline of 5 cm for the month. Above-average outflows combined with below-average supplies caused Lake Ontario’s level to decline by 23 cm last month, compared to its average July decline of 8 cm.
With average water supply conditions, the level of Lake Superior is expected to rise by a few centimetres during August. The levels of lakes Michigan–Huron, St. Clair, Erie and Ontario are all expected to decline, as they typically do during the month of August.
