Riverside resident outreach and restoration of the banks of Dam-en-Terre in Alma$19,000Alma, Saguenay Lac Saint-JeanThe project is aimed at encouraging riverside residents to take action on the banks of Dam-en-Terre to combat blue-green algal blooms in the Grande Décharge River. These blooms have been observed since 2007 and they compromise the area’s tourism industry. By revegetating the banks, water quality will be improved (drinking water supply for Alma, a town of 30,000 inhabitants). There are 120 noncompliant, largely grass yards, at Dam-en-Terre. The project aims to contact at least 30 property owners who are willing to revegetate the banks of their land to a depth of at least 3 m from the water’s edge. In all, 1,350 plants will be planted over 0.5 km of banks. In addition, six municipal inspectors will be trained by the ZIP committee. Lastly, riverside residents will be informed of how best to manage their septic tanks, pesticide and fertilizer use, and the importance of riparian strips of land to biodiversity.
Enviro-ActionReducing GHGs for applied ecology$18,050AlmaThe aim of the project is to raise awareness among 500 participants of their potential to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs). They will be contacted by telephone, email and personal visits. Participants will quantify the GHGs they produce (transportation, heating, air conditioning, electric appliances, drinking water, lighting, garbage, gardening, leisure and food). The project aims to see a 250-tonne reduction in GHGs or one half-tonne per participant. A follow-up will be conducted to evaluate the changes in behaviour.
