    KANGERLUUSUAQ, Greenland -- October 30, 2009 --  Canada's Environment Minister, Jim Prentice, Nunavut's Minister of the Environment, Daniel Shewchuk, and Greenland’s Minister of Fisheries, Hunting and Agriculture, Ane Hansen, today announced the signing of an agreement between the governments of Canada, Nunavut, and Greenland to ensure the protection of shared polar bear populations.

Thirty-eight projects throughout the Great Lakes are receiving $2.2 million in funding this year.

  • Government Of Canada Provides Over $500,000 For Aboriginal Projects For Species At Risk In Western Canada

    WINNIPEG, Man. -- October 15, 2009 -- Steven Fletcher, Minister of State for Democratic Reform, on behalf of Canada’s Environment Minister Jim Prentice and Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea, announced today $532,500 for twelve new projects in Western Canada. The projects will build capacity in Aboriginal organizations and communities and support their involvement in recovery actions and the protection of critical habitat for species at risk on Aboriginal lands. From this contribution, $281,500 was provided for 5 projects in Manitoba. This amount comes from the budget that the Government of Canada recently committed to the Aboriginal Funds for Species at Risk Program.

    ANTIGONISH, NS -- June 3, 2009 –- Mr. Terrence Eugene Boyle, owner of Atlantic Country Composting, was ordered to pay a penalty of $8,000 in Nova Scotia provincial court in Antigonish yesterday after pleading guilty to releasing a substance from his facility which was deleterious to fish into a stream that enters Tracadie Harbour. Mr. Boyle also pleaded guilty to altering fish habitat, stemming from the same release.

    Quite a mixed bag of weather conditions was reported in May. Northern areas had very cold temperatures in some locations and many locations reported snow. The snow that fell in Pickle Lake actually broke their all-time May snowfall record – and most of it fell in just two days. Temperature-wise, the mean values were two to five degrees below normal for most of Northwestern Ontario.

    KITIMAT, B.C. -- April 9, 2009 -- West Fraser Mills Ltd. (West Fraser) today received a penalty totalling $130,000 after pleading guilty in Kitimat Provincial Court to one count of depositing a deleterious substance into water frequented by fish, contrary to subsection 36(3) of the federal Fisheries Act.
