The Offset System is one component of the Government of Canada’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is designed to encourage projects in Canada that reduce greenhouse gases through voluntary actions. Information about the Offset System is provided in a series of Program Rules and Guidance documents (the Guides):
This Guide provides the rules and guidance on the requirements and processes to complete an Offset System Quantification Protocol, which describes the approach that must be used to quantify the greenhouse gas reductions for a specific project type in Canada’s Offset System. Comprehensive guidance is provided for preparing the quantification documentation.
This Guide provides the rules and guidance on the requirements and processes to create offset credits, from the registration of the project to the issuance of offset credits. Comprehensive guidance is provided for preparing the project documentation.
This Guide provides the rules and guidance on the requirements and processes to verify the eligible greenhouse gas reductions or removals achieved from a registered project. Comprehensive guidance is provided for preparing the verification documentation.
Refinements to the rules governing the Offset System may be enacted in the future. Participants in the Offset System will be responsible for ensuring they are using the most recent versions of the Program Rules and Guidance documents. Information for participants in the Offset System, including the current versions of all of the Guides, will be provided on the Offset System website.[1]
