Paul’s Point Fisheries Limited Sentenced to
Pay a $10,000 Penalty for Disposal at Sea Violations
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- Paul’s Point Fisheries Limited was ordered to pay a $10,000 penalty in Nova Scotia Provincial Court in Halifax for illegally disposing dead slime eels at sea without an ocean disposal permit. Charges were laid against the company by Environment Canada in July 2008 under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. The ocean disposal provisions and the permitting process of the Act allows for assessment of the potential affects of disposal at sea and is intended to protect the marine environment by controlling or prohibiting disposal activity.
The company pleaded guilty to loading dead slime eels onto a vessel for the purposes of disposal at sea and to disposing of the dead eels at sea.
The penalty includes a court ordered payment of $8,000 to the Environmental Damages Fund, which is administered by Environment Canada. The Fund provides local organizations with the resources to carry out projects that aim to restore or remediate environmental damage or related environmental work, such as parkland and wildlife conservation and educational projects.
The remaining $2,000 constitutes a fine paid to the court.
