Claude Resources Required to Pay $90,000 for Environmental Offences Under the Fisheries Act

LA RONGE, Sask. -- September 27, 2010 - On September 27, 2010, Claude Resources Inc. pleaded guilty in Provincial Court of three offences under the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations of the Fisheries Act  including depositing of an acutely lethal effluent, depositing of effluent containing total suspended solids in excess of the prescribed limits into a place where it may enter water frequented by fish, and the failing to report to an inspector without delay when monitoring tests have exceeded the prescribed limits.

Environment Canada conducted offsite and onsite inspections and a search warrant was also executed at Claude Resources Inc.’s Seabee Gold Mine on June 3, 2009. Charges were laid following an investigation by Environment Canada’s Enforcement Officers.

Following the guilty plea, the company was assessed penalties totalling $90,000, of which $40,000 is to be paid as a fine, and $50,000 will be directed to the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. Under the Fisheries Act, fines may be directed to proponents to fund environmental projects.

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is a nonprofit, non-government charitable organization dedicated to supporting wildlife conservation, habitat preservation and acquiring habitat for sustaining wildlife.
