Lack Of Export Permit And Measurement Violation Results In Fines
SARNIA, Ontario -- Advanced Finishing Technologies of Corunna, Ontario, was convicted in the Ontario Court of Justice on two counts of violating the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, and the Export and Import of Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Recyclable Materials Regulations. The company was fined $5,000 on each count and the total fine of $10,000 was directed to the Environmental Damages Fund.
The offences related to the export of hazardous waste, specifically, corrosive inorganic acid in liquid form between the dates of December 23, 2005 and October 13, 2006, The company exceeded their export permit by 3,579 kilograms. The unit of measurement on the export manifest provided for this shipment was inconsistent with the unit of measurement specified on the export permit. This deviation was a violation of the Regulation.
