Waste Management of Canada Corporation Fined $12,500 under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994

Waste Management of Canada Corporation pleaded guilty on February 13, 2009 in Provincial Court in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador to charges under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 for permitting the deposit of a substance harmful to migratory birds in waters frequented by migratory birds.

Charges resulted from an investigation by Environment Canada’s Enforcement Branch that began in January 2008 and has resulted in a fine of $12,500 which will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund.

The Government of Canada is committed to protecting and preserving our environment and recognizes that environmental good must follow environmental harm.  That is why the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 was amended in 2005 to direct fines to the Environmental Damages Fund so that communities can repair the actual harm that has been done.
