SaskatchewanRancher fined $4000 for pollution to Mistawasis Creek

BlaineLake, Saskatchewan– A Prince Albert area cattle rancher was ordered to pay a $500 fine and make a $3,500 contribution to the Environmental Damages Fund after pleading guilty to violating subsection 36(3) of the Fisheries Act.

On May 7 in a Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan court, Mr. Walter Wolbert pleaded guilty to allowing the deposit of a deleterious substance to fish bearing waters.

In March 2007, Mr. Wolbert received an Inspector’s Direction to secure alternate water arrangements for his cattle and to prepare a detailed plan to prevent the deposit of manure into Mistawasis Creek, which flows into fish bearing waters. An investigation began in May 2007 following complaints referred to Environment Canada.
