The air issues associated with SO₂ are:

• Acid Rain (acidification caused by deposition of acid and sulphate transformation products)
• Smog (SO₂ contribution to secondary formation of fine PM)
• Visibility/Regional Haze (SO₂ contribution to secondary formation of fine PM)
• HAPs (potential adverse health effects from direct exposure to SO₂ and/or its acid and sulphate transformation products makes SO₂ a HAP in its own right)
