Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance in Support of the Chemicals Management Plan

Canada has an impressive series of environmental monitoring programs, some having been in place for decades, to monitor toxic substances in environmental matrices. Recently, these programs have been integrated and augmented under the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) to provide a fully national program capable of tracking legacy substances, as well as newer emerging chemicals of concern in various environmental matrices. The CMP Environmental Monitoring and Surveillance (M&S) Program includes the measurement of specific chemicals in outdoor air, water, sediments, fish and birds, as well as in samples from landfills and wastewater treatment plants across Canada. Basic program information such as sampling location, methods, data storage and analytes being measured in the CMP environmental M&S program are discussed.
