Research Scientist - Study Leader, Biogeochemistry of Mercury and Other Heavy Metals in Freshwater Ecosystems
CURRENT S&T / RESEARCH - Research on the biogeochemical pathways of mercury and other heavy metals and the ecotoxicology of bioavailable metal species in various freshwater environments
- Research on variations in the stable isotope composition of mercury in sediment cores and food web organisms from mercury-polluted lakes in different regions of Canada to gain new insights into the sources and biogeochemical pathways of mercury
- Research employing energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis and transmission electron microscopy to investigate the partitioning and accumulation of heavy metals by bacteria and colloidal particles in sediments of lakes polluted with mine or smelter wastes
- Research employing rRNA analyses and a wide range of biochemical and geochemical methods of analysis to investigate effects of heavy metals from mine tailings on the phylogenetic makeup and activities of in situ bacterial communities in lake sediments
- Research on the biogeochemistry and ecological effects of heavy metals in lakes polluted with mine tailings or smelter fallout, with particular attention to the speciation and bioavailability of the metals and the toxicity of the metals to aquatic organisms
- Research on the biogeochemistry of mercury in lakes, river-lake systems, and reservoirs, with emphasis on the speciation, bioavailability, and bioaccumulation of mercury and factors that affect the activities of methylating and demethylating bacteria in sediments
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES / INTERESTS
Study Leader in many research projects on the biogeochemistry of mercury and other heavy metals, including three Canada Water Act investigations of mercury in mercury-polluted river-lake systems and hydroelectric reservoirs, as well as studies of heavy metals in lakes polluted with mine tailings or smelter emissions, or both
Earlier research on phosphorus binding by humic matter in lakes, effects of humic matter on primary production in lakes, Precambrian evolution as revealed by organic "chemical fossils," biologically mediated chemical weathering and secondary mineral genesis, prebiotic polypeptide synthesis on clay crystals, and analysis of Precambrian varves
Multiple publications in scientific journals and books and presentations at international scientific conferences, sometimes by invitation; Several critical reviews published as book chapters or journal articles, most of which were invited contributions
Member of Environmental Resource Group appointed under the Canada Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) to advise the government on environmental effects of copper and zinc smelters and refineries; Served as Adjunct Professor at University of Manitoba.
