Interim Plan 2001 on Particulate Matter and Ozone: chapter 2

2.0 Emissions

The basis of this Interim Plan 2001 on Particulate Matter and Ozone is a series of actions aimed at emission sources with the greatest impact on air quality. Transboundary pollution, and the transportation and industrial sectors, are the major sources. The table below shows the importance of addressing emissions in the transportation and industrial sectors.

Emissions Profile - Selected Transportation and Stationary Sources Percentage of National Totals in 1995*
  Sector PM2.5** SO2 NOx VOC CO2 equiv
* Excluding open sources.
** Refers to direct emissions only; total PM2.5 would be greater.
Transportation: On-Road Vehicles 9 2 35 22 1
  Off-Road Vehicles 5 1 10 3 3
  Rail 4 - 5 - 1
  Air and Marine 2 2 7 2 3
Stationary Sources: Electric Power 4 20 11 - 18
